Cast on multiples of eight (8) plus five (5) stitches
 (for our sample we have cast on 21 stitches)

abbreviations
RS - right side, k - knit, p - purl


Row 1: (RS) k
Row 2: K5 *p3, k5: repeat from *
Row 3: P5, * k3, p5: repeat from *
Row 4: Repeat Row 2
Row 5: K
Row 6: K1, *p3, k5: repeat from *: end p3, k1
Row 7: P1, *k3, p5: repeat from *: end k3, p1
Row 8: Repeat Row 6

Repeat these 8 rows for the desired length

Row 1: K
Row 2, 4 & 6: K6, P4
Row 3 & 5: K4, P6
Row 7: K
Row 8, 10 & 12: P4, K6
