Continental Knitting
There is much debate in knitting circles as to
which is
the true and traditional knitting technique the English or the
Continental.
Even more debates as to which is best and easiest to learn.
How these two techniques derived is not entirely
clear, but like any craft, over the years the master craftsmen(women)
have looked at ways to improve their techniques to make it easier and
more efficient. It is all part of the evolution of Knitting.
How and when knitting was first started is also a
debate amongst many historians, with records from historians
dating the art of knitting
to 2000 and 3000 years ago, with artefacts
being found that
date back to the third and sixth centuries AD.
Many knitters also argue that knitting using the Continental
style is faster, as there is more efficient useage of hand
movements,
for others they find difficulty with the co-ordination of
movement, as knitting Continental
style requires much more co-ordination using the left hand.
For these knitters
it defeats the efficiency agruement as they have
to go back and pick up the dropped stitches.
As Knitting
Continental style does
require a lot more co-ordination using the left hand, for many
new knitters
they can find themselves in a tangle.
It is for this reason that Knit-easy
has ensured that both techniques are explained and illustrated inside
